About Katherine Gorge

Katherine Gorge is in the Nitmiluk National Park around 244 km from Darwin, the State Capital of Northern Territory. Many tours embark from Darwin but the closest town is Katherine, at only 30 or so kilometres from the park.

History and Heritage

Prior to the arrival of Europeans the area around Katherine was the traditional land of the Jawoyan, Walpiri, Dagaman and Wardiman Aboriginal people. The Katherine River and Katherine Gorge were popular meeting places.
