Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the locality of Warumungu about 105 km south of Tennant Creek, and 393 km north of Alice Springs. The nearest settlement is the small town of Wauchope located 9 km to the south

History and Heritage

The Marbles are on the traditional land of the Warumungu, Kaytetye, Alyawarra, and Warlpiri peoples. The Indigenous name for the boulders is Karlu Karlu. The rough translation of the name is ‘round boulders.’ Karlu Karlu are of great importance to the Aboriginal people in the area and are a Registered Sacred Site. There are many Dreaming stories that elders share with new generations about Karlu Karlu. However, they are sacred and not appropriate to share with the uninitiated.

The closest accommodation to devils marbles is of course the devils marble hotel that offers great facilities but there is of course more accommodation further away from the site, including free camping and caravan sites.

Due to the area being uninhabited the main attraction is the devils marbles that of course are a beautiful sight and well known around Australia.
