The Menindee Lakes is a system of nine large, but relatively shallow lakes, located in south-west New South Wales on the Darling River, about 200 km upstream of the Darling River’s junction with the River Murray.
History and Heritage
After what had been thousand of year of Aboriginal habitation, the Menindee Lakes became a lifeline to European explores travelling through this arid region. Many famous explorers such as Bourke and Wills relied on these lakes during their expeditions.
